What is Modafinil?

Modalert or Provigil is the brand name for Modafinil.

Modafinil can be taken by adults who suffer from narcolepsy, severe fatigue symptoms or sleep-wake disorders.

Modafinil works by restoring neurotransmitters activity within the brain and spinal cord. Is a CNS stimulant similar to the amphetamine group but has less potential to cause abuse and dependence.

How long will it take for Modafinil to work?

As general rule Modafinil should start working around 1 hour after you have taken the pill but this could vary from patient to patient as many can start experiencing effects in 30 minutes.

How long the medication works will depend mainly on the age , health , weight and of course how serious the condition you are treating is .

Modafinil effect can go from 6 to 8 hours in most individuals, but of course it will always depend on the prescribed treatment from Doctor and the condition or symptoms you need to treat.

How often can I take Modafinil?

Modafinil presentation is tablet/pills in 100mg or 200mg usually prescribed to take 1 pill per day with or without food and by mouth.

When modafinil is indicated for shift work sleep disorder, you might take your dose 1 hour before the beginning of your work shift and 1 tablet 200mgin the morning for narcolepsy treatment or divided into two doses a day 100 mg in the morning and 100 mg at midday.

You must always take this medication as indicated by your Doctor because your treatment will be based on your medical condition and has to be specially indicated according what you need and the results you want to have.

If you take more than the indicated dosage you will have a bigger chance of side effects.

Can I take Modafinil if I am taking other medicines at the same time?

You must take Modafinil as indicated but remember to always tell your Doctor if you are under treatment for any disease or taking medicines over the counter because it could affect on how Modafinil works or how other medications works. Also, the interactions with other medicine could develop severe side effects.

Be especially careful if you are taking :

Omeprazole (for acid reflux, indigestion or ulcers). 

If you are pregnant (or think you may be), are planning to become pregnant, or are breast feeding, you should not take Modafinil. Modafinil is suspected to cause birth defects if taken during pregnancy

Antiviral medicines to treat HIV infection (protease inhibitors as indinavir or ritonavir). 

Ciclosporin (used to prevent organ transplant rejection, or for arthritis or psoriasis).

Medicines for epilepsy (carbamazepine, phenobarbital or phenytoin).

Medicines for depression (amitriptyline, citalopram or fluoxetine) or anxiety (diazepam)

Children or under aged 18 years should not take this medicine

What if Modafinil doesn’t work?

Modafinil effectiveness will depends whether you are a long-term user or if it is the first time using it.

First of all, make sure you took the medicine as your doctor prescribed for your treatment, and remember that medicines does not always works the same in every patient.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Modafinil has to be used as needed or as prescribed by your doctor, so you are not supposed to miss a dose.

But, in case this happen do not take it if is bedtime or you are not supposed to be awake for several hours if you have only miss your dose for minutes or no more than 2 hours take your dose it as soon as you realize.

In case it is near the next one scheduled miss that dose and keep taking the medicine as prescribed, do not take double dose to compensate a missed one.

What happens if I overdose?

You must always follow the instructions/dosage prescribed by your doctor.

In case you overdose seek for medical attention specially if you feel: chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or faint.

 Modafinil Precautions and warnings

Is very important to tell your Doctor if you are or may be allergic to Modafinil and always try to avoid drinking alcohol when using Modafinil as could affect its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects.

Never mix the use of Modafinil with recreational drugs , remember you are using it for medical purpose not for fun or inappropriate uses because it could cause severe health problems and physical or psychological dependence

Possible side effects are headache skin rashes or itching, ulcers in your mouth, eyes, nose or genitals. You may also develop high temperature (fever), feel wheeziness or your face, mouth or throat begins to swell.

If any of those symptoms persist, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
